Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween!! It’s my favorite time of year. Fall is in full swing, the colors are breathtaking, and it kicks off the holiday season. It’s a day when we can let our imaginations run wild and be anything or anyone we want. As a child, I was so excited to dress up in a costume and go trick-or-treating. Free candy?! It’s a child’s dream come true!!

I have so many great memories of Halloween and there’s one childhood memory that stands out in my mind. As many of you know, if you read my book, I was sick a lot as a young child and when I was either 5 or 6 years old, I was very sick with pneumonia on Halloween and couldn’t go trick-or-treating. I was so sad and remember crying and begging to go out, but at the same time was so sick that I could barely get out of bed. I remember my parents trying to console me and it’s so clear in my mind because my father was home, which made the day even more memorable.

A little while later, my mother came into my room and said, “Let’s get you into your costume. We’re going trick-or-treating.” I couldn’t believe it. I was so excited! So, I got ready, and my mother handed me a bag. When I walked out of my bedroom, my mother took my hand and began leading me around the house taking me from room to room. To my surprise, there were family and friends waiting in each room to give me candy!!

It turned out to be a wonderful day and I remember my mom had a fire going in the fireplace, cinnamon brewing on the stove, pumpkins and decorations around the house, and special treats for dinner and dessert! It was such a special day and I think it is why, to this day, that I make each and every holiday as special as I can.

As a mom, myself, I have traditions that I have created to share with my children and they have come to look forward to them and now as adults, still look forward to what each holiday will bring. They love that I always have some type of decorations up which always includes lots of lights!!

So, as I post this Halloween blog, I am baking my traditional pumpkin bread, getting the ingredients ready for our make-your-own-pizza bar and putting on my Halloween costume!!

How do you celebrate Halloween? What are your traditions? What are some of your favorite memories? I’d love to hear from you. Have a wonderful day!!

  1. Thanks for sharing your mom’s creativity! I am sure you felt better after getting in-home treats.

  2. That was a wonderful treat your parents and all involved did for you as a child. And your day today sounds like yummy fun. Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy!

  3. Halloween is my birthday, so I used to get teased a lot about being a witch when I was growing. I enjoyed back in the day when things were so much safer. Glad folks have found alternative ways to celebrate. Boooo! To the people who think ill of this fun holiday!
