World Music Day

World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, is an annual celebration that takes place on June 21. This day is dedicated to promoting music in various forms and genres across the globe. It encourages both amateur and professional musicians to perform in public spaces, such as streets, parks, and community centers, making music accessible to everyone.

World Music Day originated in France in 1982. It was initiated by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and musician Maurice Fleuret. The idea was to encourage people to enjoy and participate in music making. It is celebrated on June 21, which is also the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This date was chosen to take advantage of the longer daylight hours.

The event has grown to be a global phenomenon, celebrated in over 120 countries. Each country and city may have its own specific events and performances. The spirit of World Music Day is inclusivity. Musicians of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, are encouraged to participate. Various music genres are represented, ensuring a diverse musical experience.

One of the core aspects of World Music Day is free public performances. Musicians are encouraged to perform in public places, making music more accessible to everyone.
