Summer Writing

As we enjoy the lazy days of summer, here are some 10 engaging writing exercises to keep your skills sharp over the summer.

1. Daily Journal

Objective: Improve consistency and reflective thinking.

Exercise: Write a daily journal entry about your day. Reflect on what you did, how you felt, and any interesting observations. Aim for at least one paragraph each day.

2. Descriptive Prompts

Objective: Enhance descriptive writing and sensory detail.

Exercise: Choose a place, object, or person and write a detailed description. Use all five senses to paint a vivid picture. For example, describe your favorite summer spot.

3. Poetry Challenge

Objective: Experiment with different poetic forms and styles.

Exercise: Write a new poem each week, trying different forms such as haiku, sonnet, free verse, or limerick. Focus on imagery, emotion, and rhythm.

4. Writing Prompts

Objective: Spark creativity and practice spontaneous writing.

Exercise: Use a writing prompt to start a short story or scene. Here are a few to get started:

Exercise: Start a summer blog about your experiences, thoughts, or interests. Aim to post at least once a week. Focus on clarity, engagement, and consistency.

7. Book Reviews

Objective: Enhance analytical and critical thinking skills.

Exercise: Read a book each week and write a review. Discuss what you liked, what you didn’t, and what you learned. Share your reviews online or keep them in a journal.

8. Personal Essay

Objective: Explore self-expression and personal narrative.

Exercise: Write a personal essay about a meaningful experience or topic you’re passionate about. Focus on conveying your thoughts and emotions clearly and compellingly.

9. Creative Nonfiction

Objective: Blend factual writing with storytelling.

Exercise: Write a creative nonfiction piece about a real event or experience. Use narrative techniques like dialogue, scene setting, and character development.

10. Research and Write

Objective: Improve research skills and factual writing.

Exercise: Pick a topic you’re curious about, research it, and write an informative article or essay. Focus on organizing your information clearly and engagingly.
